Couple of things

- This is a good read by Meritt Melancon. We've all heard about the impact of the economic downturn on the non-profit community in Athens-Clarke County, but it's even magnified in the rural areas where there are fewer local donors and, proportionally speaking, a dramatic increase in the need for services.

- Kudos to Athens-Clarke County for publicizing the zones due for leaf and limb pickup as the schedule settles into its traditional rotation, and kudos to the Athens Banner-Herald for running it. Good community information all the way around.

- Jason Winders, my former boss and one of my many journalistic mentors, is moving on to greener pastures ... literally as he will be enrolling in graduate school in Canada to study environmental sustainability. The community, and the paper, is going to be poorer with out. I echo Hillary's thoughts on this too. I learned much from him about responsibility, journalistic ethics and the like, and the very least I can do is buy that man a well-deserved beer before he departs.

- She played steady on Saturday, but the final round of a major championship is hard on anyone, let alone a University of Georgia graduate who had never played in an LPGA Tour event. Watching Jean Reynolds on Saturday, I really thought she had set herself up well for a good run on Sunday, but, regardless, she deserves a hearty 'well done' for doing us locals proud.
