Chi Phi plans confirmed

I just got off the phone with Athens-Clarke County District 10 Commissioner Mike Hamby who confirmed that Chi Phi has reversed its original plan to preserve Arnocroft.

Hamby said representatives from Chi Phi made the announcement during a meeting featuring other community representatives on Monday. He said the fraternity no longer had plans to utilize Arnocroft, which it had originally slated to use for its Chi Phi Educational Trust. As a result, they would consider moving the structure off the existing property or, if necessary, demolish it.

Hamby said he opposed both options.

"I wouldn't be comfortable with either of those possibilities," Hamby said. "I would like to see a plan that preserves the building at that site, and I can't envision supporting (demolition or a move) while the community is planning to create a historic district in that corridor."
