From the mailbag

Reader LW also disagrees with my take on Oconee County's proposed changes ...

Many Oconee citizens have turned to (the Athens Banner-Herald) for information about our county since our local OE is totally government controlled (Melvin Davis). We get only one view 99% of the time. As a retired professional and CEO, forty year Oconee resident. I respectively disagree with your recent comments about Oconee government and so does the majority of our citizens that elected these commissioners for the specific purpose of bringing about this change. We are tired of nontransparent, unethical activities. As would any man of honor you would not have made the comments you made had you been a tad better informed. We welcome and enjoy your comments but you need to become informed before you speak. This is a well educated community and you lack of knowledge "stuck out like a sore thumb."

A few thoughts: It is refreshing to see Oconee County elected officials listening to the citizens and carrying out their campaign promises to the people. Oconee voters turned out in significant numbers recently demanding more transparent, trustworthy government. We elected good candidates that are getting the job done! Thanks commissioners.

The relative minor changes proposed and soon to be implemented is good legislation and has the potential for saving Oconee taxpayers millions in the future. The petty whining and threats by a few to such change has become a laughing matter in this well educated community and that is a good news.

I wish to personally and publically thank and commend commissioners Luke, Hale, Horton and Daniel for listening to the citizens demand that we move back to the five county commissioner representative government it was designed and intended to be.

It would be nice if Commissioner Melvin Davis would willing give up some of the powers he has assumed, show a positive attitude and cooperate with the other four commissioners that are trying so desperately to regain the trust of Oconee citizens in their local government.
