The drought's over ... really

Well, after experiencing the second-wettest spring in the the past 115 years, the drought in Georgia is officially over.

What does that mean? A lifting of the stringent restrictions that were needed to combat the drought that crippled the northern portion of the state for the past two years, which is welcome news to folks who like working in their yards like me.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, even-numbered addresses are permitted to water on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, while odd-number ones can do so on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. While watering is allowed all day long, folks are encouraged to avoid doing so between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to maximize the effectiveness.

While some environmental groups are disappointed in the move, I have to break ranks somewhat and see this appears to be a sensible move. With Lake Lanier within its median range for full pool, and others throughout the state now above full pool, easing the restrictions is would appear to be a sound move.

Folks should still conserve, but giving gardeners the green light is fine by me.
